Explore the Enchanting Ubud Monkey Forest

Deep in the heart of Bali’s cultural capital, Ubud, lies one of the island’s most captivating and mystical sites: the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, or Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana. This lush, 12.5-hectare tropical forest is not only a magnet for travelers seeking adventure and culture but also an active spiritual center for the local community.

A Home to Over 1,200 Macaques

The sanctuary is inhabited by more than 1,200 Balinese long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), divided into several groups that occupy different territories within the forest. These playful yet mischievous monkeys are a highlight for visitors — watching them swing through ancient trees, groom each other, or curiously observe humans is endlessly entertaining.

But remember: they’re wild animals. The sanctuary provides clear guidelines for visitors, including not feeding the monkeys and securing valuables like sunglasses or loose bags.

Temples and Sacred Sites

The Ubud Monkey Forest is also an important spiritual and conservation site, home to three 14th-century Hindu temples:

  1. Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal is one of the three Hindu temples located in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, known as the Ubud Monkey Forest, within the Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana complex, Padangtegal, Ubud District, Gianyar Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia.

Also called the “Main Temple,” Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal is situated in the southwestern part of the Ubud Monkey Forest area and is used to worship Hyang Widhi in the personification of the god Shiva. Like the two other temples in the complex, this temple is believed to have been built around 1350. The temple complex plays an important role in the spiritual life of the local community.

  2. Pura Beji

Pura Beji Temple, located in the northwestern part of the park, is used for the worship of Hyang Widhi in the personification of Gangga. As a “Holy Spring” bathing temple, it serves as a place for spiritual and physical purification before religious ceremonies.

  3. Pura Prajapati

Prajapati Temple, located in the northeastern part of the park, is used to worship Hyang Widhi in the personification of Prajapati. A cemetery adjacent to this temple receives the bodies of the deceased for temporary burial while they await a mass cremation ceremony, held once every five years.

These temples are adorned with ancient stone carvings and statues, many covered in moss, giving them a mystical, almost otherworldly aura. Access to temple interiors is restricted to worshippers, but visitors can still admire the stunning architecture from outside.
